DIY Yarn Hearts You Can Make in an Afternoon
I’ve seen these charming little yarn hearts floating around the internet, and they completely caught my eye. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give them a try. I’m so glad I did because they’re quick, simple, and surprisingly satisfying to make! They are also a great project for using up yarn left-overs.
I’m sharing my results plus a few helpful tips to help you create your own. Ready to get started?
This is what you’ll need.
Supplies
A yarn ball for each color of heart you want to make
Heart shape pattern (Mine is 2“ tall and 3 1/8“ at the widest part)
Cardboard
Scissors
Double-sided tape
Instructions
1) Draw and cut out a heart shape on paper. Trace the heart shape onto cardboard and cut out as many as you would like to make!
2) Place double-sided tape around the curved edges and the point of the heart. Tape is not a requirement but I found it very helpful when starting to wrap the heart.
3) Place the end of the yarn at the top center of the heart and leave an 8 inches tail. This tail will be half of the loop when you are finished wrapping. Start wrapping the yarn around the heart in a criss-cross manner, turning the heart in your hand as you cover each part of the heart with a layer of yarn. The tape will hold the yarn on the curves and point. Be sure to keep the yarn tight with each wrap.
4) After the cardboard is covered with the first layer of yarn, continue wrapping until you have a nice shape. The center of the heart will grow as you continue to criss-cross the yarn.
5) When you are happy with the shape of the heart, work the yarn to the top of the heart and tie the ends together. Create a loop with the two tails and tie a knot at the top.
I hope you enjoy making these hearts! Here are some ways you can use them in your home…
…tie them to a package…
…decorate your table…
…make them into a bookmark, hang them on a drawer pull, string them together to make a garland or…
…simply place them in a beautiful crystal bowl for decoration!
Whether you make one or a whole handful, these little yarn hearts are a simple reminder that small, handmade projects bring a lot of joy to your day! Share them with others and that joy will multiply!
