Quilted Hearts for Valentine Day

I was inspired by Jan Howell’s Scrappy Hearts episode on YouTube and decided to make some of these colorful hearts. They are a perfect way to use up fabric scraps and very simple to make! You may enjoy making them as well!

You will find Jan’s tutorial very easy to follow so pop over and take a look! This project is great for beginners or advanced sewers.

Supply List

fabric scraps

quilt batting

sewing machine

cardboard heart pattern

poly stuffing

heat reactive pen

needle, thread, scissors,

Create a piece of patchwork fabric by sewing scraps to a piece of quilt batting.

Place two fabric scraps with their right sides together on top of the quilt batting. Stitch along one side, then press the fabric open. Continue this process across the batting, sewing each new piece to the raw edge of the previous one.

Continue sewing scraps to the batting until it is completely covered.

Cut out a cardboard shape of a heart. Trace the shape onto the scrappy fabric using a heat reactive pen. You will want these marks to disappear later. Cut out the heart shapes leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance outside your marks.

Choose a backing fabric for the hearts and layer them right sides together. Trace the heart shape again on the batting side of the hearts. Stitch around the hearts on the drawn line. Be sure to leave an opening on the side to turn the heart.

Turn the hearts right sides out and stuff them with poly batting. Hand stitch the hearts closed. If any of the ink marks are showing, simply apply heat with an iron or hair dryer to make them disappear!

You can add ribbons to the top of the hearts and hang them from a doorknob or forage a tree branch from your garden and create your very own indoor heart tree! Or…display them in a beautiful crystal bowl on your kitchen counter top!

I cut out several smaller hearts from the “left over” scappy fabric and will use them to make cards and small pendents!

I hope you enjoyed this project! Let me know in the comments below!
