Sunflower Craft Series Part 2 - Applique Tea Towel

“Despite knowing they won't be here for long, they still choose to live their brightest lives — sunflowers."  Rupi Kaur

Welcome to part 2 of our Sunflower Craft Series! Sunflowers symbolize warmth, positivity, and happiness, and there's no better way to bring that sunny energy into your home than with a charming, handmade tea towel.

This project is perfect for adding a touch of summer to your kitchen or as a thoughtful, handmade gift for a friend.

Supplies

You will need:

  • Three pieces of cotton small-print fabric in sunflower colors

  • Iron-on adhesive

  • Pre-made tea towel in green hues

  • One large button

  • Embroidery floss and needle (optional)

  • Iron, scissors, paper & pencil

Let’s get crafting!

1) Iron adhesive to the back of your fabrics

2) Draw a simple petal shape pattern on paper and cut it out. Use the paper pattern to draw three petals on the back of each of your three fabrics. You will have a total of nine petals.

3) Cut out your fabric petals and peel the paper backing off each petal.

4) Arrange the petals in a flower shape at the bottom left corner of your tea towel.

Make sure your button will cover the center of the flower.

5) Adhere the fabric petals to the tea towel with a hot iron. Let it cool.

6) Audition your button. Mine had two different looks depending on which side was facing up.

7) Sew the button to the tea towel.

Note: if you want to embroidery around the flower petals, skip to the next step before sewing the button to the towel. I decided to embroidery around the flower after I attached the button…it will be much easier to do this in reverse order!

Optional

8) Blanket stitch around each of the flower petals then sew the button to the center of the flower. You can download a free embroidery guide here.

And there you have it—a beautiful sunflower applique tea towel to brighten up any kitchen! I love how this turned out and it makes me smile every time I look at it!

Stay tuned for more sunflower-themed DIYs where we’ll continue to bring you creative and fun ways to incorporate this sunny flower into your everyday life.

Until next time, keep spreading the sunflower joy and happy crafting!
